Federal Member for Moore, Ian Goodenough MP is calling on the Morrison Government to invest in infrastructure that supports the use of Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) as a fuel for the marine industry.
As one of the largest producers of LNG, Australia has the capacity to fuel its maritime industry with this more environmentally friendly option and decrease its reliance on imported transport fuel, which currently stands at 80%.
In Parliament, Mr Goodenough argued that converting the shipping industry to use LNG as a marine fuel, is the best way to achieve large-scale emissions reductions.
To put the issue into perspective he says, “The daily emissions from one large bulk iron ore carrier is equivalent to the combined emission from 50,000 cars for a year. Assuming there are 50,000 cars within my electorate of Moore, a single ship creates the same emissions per day as the entire fleet of cars in Moore over a year.”
“By adopting LNG as a marine fuel, Australia will provide the maritime industry with an alternative, sustainable and cost-effective fuel source.”
He is calling for more Federal investment and policy development to establish LNG refuelling infrastructure at major Australian Ports.
In 2019, Australia exported 77 million tons of LNG, demonstrating that our nation is ideally placed to build an LNG bunkering industry.
There is potential for Australia’s LNG bunkering market to grow from zero to greater than two million tons per annum over the next 10-15 years.
By promoting and facilitating the use of LNG as a marine transportation fuel, the Federal Government can partner with industry to help Australia’s economy grow and create jobs while reducing pollution and emissions on a large scale.
